Hamilton Mountain sits above the Escarpment, which acts as the official designation between the upper and lower portions of the city. As recently as the 1990's, there were active farms north of Limeridge Road and to the east of Upper Ottawa. Today, with a few exceptions, Hamilton Mountain is fully developed and comprises of several neighbourhoods.

There is lots to do on the mountain, and it is entirely self-sustained. Residents can find variety of entertainment such as movie theatres, a trampoline park, bowling alleys, restaurants, bars, and more.

As for shopping, there are several major retail districts. Concession Street, Upper James, the Meadowlands, Mountain Plaza, and Lime Ridge mall are the main hubs, but shops and boutiques can be found along al the main streets. Most recently, the development of the east end of the mountain has led to a boom in retail around the Heritage Green Shopping Centre as well.

Lastly, there are several parks and natural areas for those looking for some outdoor recreation, with the largest and most obvious being the Bruce Trail.  There is also the Iroquois Heights Conservation Area and Chedoke Civic Golf Club at the west side of the community and the many parks along Red Hill Valley Creek, including the Mohawk Sport Park, Kings' Forest Park, Mount Albion Conservation Area, and the Felkers Falls Conservation Area.
